In one sentence, what sets Civ apart from all the rest in the genre?

Hrmmm, I wiki'd him . . .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier and well . . . they say he was inducted in to the Hall of Fame thing . . . but uh, nothing in the wiki article would have pointed to why . . . lol.
I have never played any of his games . . . that I am aware of or can remember.

It might just be that it is one of the oldest strategy series' still going strong and for a lot of us it is like an old friend. It is the only one I know of that is still turn-based. It is not a wholly combat oriented game... there are other ways to win then vanquishing your foes. It allows you to play a civilization from 4000BC to 2050AD... not just for a campaign or an era.

How long is a turn? Is it 1 year/turn?

That is a hard question to answer because I haven't figured it out yet. I know that early in the game, say 4000BC to 1000BC, it is 20 years per turn IIRC. By the 1800s (and maybe earlier) it is 1yr per turn. I think it scales down over time, because I have seen it go 5 years at times.

Ah, cool . . . was going to say . . . that could take forever.
The Total War stuff is a year per turn . . . but it is set during certain ages . . . though I have never "won" the campaign . . . I always get taken out by assassins near the end game.

speacking of which. Just tracked my CIV IV package.
It is now in PA. I live in MA so I shouled havwe it in a day or 2.
Hard to explain whats so special about the CIV series. Its not so much 1 thing but more of how all the little things work together to make something great. Its the only strategy game I play and I have been playing since CIV 2.
